And we're back, cleansed of all sin, but still packing some dirty grooves. Dig the Junction Wednesday night for the debut of Michael Kiwanuka's excellent new LP, which came out in January, but only recently got a U.S. vinyl release. Plus, late 70s sweetness from Leo's Sunshipp, percussion heavy grooves from Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band, and more from volume 3 of the great Spiritual Jazz series from Jazzman Records!

Song for my father.
Diggin' deep at the Junction Wednesday night. Still more to hear from the new Antibalas & the electric Denson/Soulive tribute to Melvin Sparks, plus the debut of a tribute album from a group that goes by Spectrum Road , paying respects to the Tony Williams Lifetime and featuring Vernon Reid & Jack Bruce. And heavy sounds from Phil Woods & his European Rhythm Machine, Kingston influenced grooves from a long sought after MPS side from Monty Alexander & Ernest Ranglin, and an opening set for my dad, who would've turned 71 today. See you then.

Dusty fingers.
Blame James Mason 'cause we're still in a sweet '70s groove at the
Junction. We'll hear yet another great track from Mason's impossibly
rare but recently reissued opus, Rhythm of Life, in addition to some other great tracks in the same vein from Miroslav Vitous & Matthew Larkin Cassell. Plus, heavy sounds from Woody Shaw and fonky flute from Jeremy Steig and a happy birthday to Jerry Garcia via Merl Saunders, all spun on 100% vinyl...natch.

Rhythm of life.
Make a stop at the Junction tonight for 100% vinyl funkiness. Two
weeks off means we are brimming with new releases to bring your way.
Get ready for a new one from the Filthy Six,
an album that pays homage to the classic Blue Note/Prestige organ funk
albums of the late '60s. Plus, a fantastic reissue of the ultra-rare Ron Forella...Moves! LP, which was originally created to accompany a NYC dance troupe performance. But, best of all, James Mason's impossibly scarce masterpiece, Rhythm of Life,
was just reissued by a Japan's Shout label, and since I never thought
I'd come across a copy, let me tell you, it was worth the wait! Come on
in!

One & done.
Beat the heat and dig some sweet vinyl grooves tonight at the Junction. Got some Gambian funk from Guelewar,
dubbed "an acid trip from Banjul to Dakar" and compiled for the first
time by the always fine Kindred Spirits label. Also, more from Volume 2 of the Spiritual Jazz compilation from Jazzman and Kelan Philip Cohran & The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Plus, a new reissue of Ann Peebles thumpin' I Can't Stand The Rain and a few from Allen Toussaint.

Fathers & sons.
Just in time for Father's Day, Honest Jon's drops the first ever collaboration of Sun Ra alum Kelan Philip Cohran and his sons' globe trottin' Hypnotic Brass Ensemble!
Got a great eclectic set coming, highlighted by the likes of the
Kelenkye Band, Piotr Fiegel, and a smoker by Johnny "Hammond" Smith.
Plus, after losing my copy of the 2nd volume of Jazzman's Spiritual Jazz comp to thieves, I've finally been able to track down another copy. Dig it Wednesday night.

What the world needs now.
Finally! As promised, the Sugarman 3 and Hilton Felton
lps have arrived and have been replaced, respectively, so it's time
for Junction debuts! Plus, we'll check out some releases and artists
from classic late NYC funk labels like Daptone, Desco, Truth & Soul and Soul Fire, all of whom were instrumental in bringing deep funk and classic soul back to the people. And we'll drop the needle on the rarest CTI record of them all, groove to some heavy funk from Mandrill and dig an outtake from that great Mickey Murray reissue from Secret Stash. A funky good time!

A man for all reasons.
Had a couple new LPs lined up for you tonight, but one arrived warped
and the other didn't arrive at all. Still, I'll bring you a couple of
tracks from the intended artists, including Hilton Felton and The Sugarman 3, with hopes of both making their debuts next week. Plus, it's Miles Davis' 86th birthday
this weekend, and though we're saving the marathon for another time,
we still have some classics and rarities pulled. And the usual
vinyl-only madness will ensue with music from Fugi (backed by Black Merda!), hose-a-phone from Owen Marshall, and more from Kool & Together!

The naked truth.
Sweet grooves stopping by the Junction Wednesday night...so you should too! I still can't stop listening to the amazing rediscovery of Azanyah by the deep diggin' folks over at Jazzman Records, so let's check that out, plus yet another wild Jazzman reissue from multi-instrumentalist Owen Marshall. Sadly, Stax session legend and (almost) original M.G. Donald "Duck" Dunn
passed away this week, so of course we'll pay respects. But it's not
all bad news! We also got a sweet mix of percussion and keys on a new
album from Jessica Lauren...and electric piano from Romano Mussolini (son of Benito!), 'Nawlins soul from Allen Toussaint, and one more for MCA because we ran out of time last week. (ed note: it turned into three)

The one.
See you at The Junction Wednesday night two hours of deep vinyl only
cuts. Last week we debuted Jazzman Records' most recent excavation, Azanyah's The One,
a record you slept on in 1987 because you were too busy frontin' to Yo!
Bum Rush the Show or dancing awkwardly to George Michael's "Faith."
(note: I was the latter). Got a couple tracks to bring to your way
from this excellent slice of spiritual jazz, plus some more jazz burners
from such luminaries as Klaus Doldinger, Nathan Davis and The Sun Ra Arkestra performing in Egypt...with Salah Ragab! Tight.

Mixed Bag.
We are happy to report that records stores were at capacity for Record Store Day 2012. Stop at the Junction Wednesday night for a few Record Store Day exclusive releases, including unreleased Miles Davis (the marathon looms!) and the first ever official release from the Mynah Birds (Rick James & Neil Young...together at last!). Plus, genius from Allan Toussaint, psych-funk from Kool & Together and spiritual jazz from Azanyah
(recorded in 1987!). And no, we're not done with the electric piano
Eddie Russ yet...in fact, got a whole set lined up: solo, on that fresh new reissue with the Mixed Bag and another jam with Sonny Stitt!

Long in the tooth.
Good stuff going on Wednesday at the Junction as Nick Devlin, owner of Long in the Tooth Records, sits in for the show, bringing some choice cuts from his great downtown vinyl shop. Got some keepers in my sack, too: psych blues from Muddy and Howlin' Wolf, Gil Evans covering Jimi Hendrix, music from the always reliable Mainstream label, plus more from the super heavy Miles Davis Japan concerts from 1975. Come on in!

A super tight break-heavy medley out of Detroit from the emerging talent of Will Sessions this week on the Junction. Plus, more from the excellent Mickey Murray record, inspirational soul from Junior Walker & The All-Stars, and psych-funk from Stone Coal White.

People are together.
Funkiness looms Wednesday night on Soul Junction, as we debut an album from Mickey Murray that was so scarcely distributed in the early 70s that we may as well call it brand new! Plus, we'll of course pay respect to Johnny Otis, Jimmy Castor, and Etta James, three recently departed soul legends, and get into some more fuzzy blues from Albert Collins and Freddie King.

We be jammin'.
All sorts of international funky madness ahead on Soul Junction, including a late night jam session from Sweden's Svenska Lod AB, Swiss fusion from Emphasis and Thai funk from The Impossibles. But xenophobes fret not! We'll also have rare grooves from D.C.'s Hilton Felton, righteousness from The 24 Carat Black reppin' the 'Nati and we'll journey through an electric tube with Mike Mainieri...(NYC for those keeping track!)

Fuchsia Swing Song
The holiday season came to a close with a rocking Groove Food! reunion, so let's cool out with what my man Benge of Sex Fly calls "jazz burners." Sadly, Sam Rivers just passed, so we'll pay respects and we'll send DJ Lippy & DJ Bubbles off with some Texas funk. Plus, loads of heavy Fender Rhodes with Byard Lancaster's Sounds of Liberation, Lloyd McNeill's Washington Suite and Argentinian madness from Fernando Gelbard & Jorge Hector Lopez.
