Back to regular funky programming after a few weeks revolving around Montreux and the JazzMom. Got some good stuff to bring your way: Brazilian bounce from Di Melo, funky German fusion from Third Eye, and rubbery grooves from British bassman, Ross McHenry . Plus, some incredible music from the really lost Miles Davis Quartet, recorded live at Newport in 1969!

Oh! Pioneers!
Early '90s German deep funk pioneers The Poets of Rhythm
just got anthologized! These guys were very much responsible for the
real funk revival of the mid to late 1990s and inspired important
popular acts like Sharon Jones & Lee Fields and labels like Daptone and Truth & Soul.
So in addition to checking out some excellent and rare music from the
Poets of Rhythm, let's hear some music from lost luminaries like Joseph
Henry, The Soul Command and J.D. & The Evil Dynamite Band on
defunct labels like Desco and Soul Fire, all of whom were integral in bringing deep funk back to the masses. Stop by.

An excellent combo of new & old releases pulled from the stacks today at the Mt. Airy Groove. Got more from Myron & E with the Soul Investigators, a little from the neglected Mayer Hawthorne album (the jury is still out!) and, of course, Ed Motta! Plus, music from Minnie Riperton, Shuggie Otis and Stanley Cowell. Onward to victory!

Been really diggin' the new Ed Motta,
so plans are to spin more from the new one alongside some of his great
(and weird!) past albums (and maybe some Steely Dan!). Still more good
stuff to hear on the Sam Sanders release on Strata/180 Proof, plus music from Robert Aaron and congaman Big Black. See you Wednesday.

Been waiting for the new Ed Motta
since its' delay in April...but it's in and ready and most
importantly, it's killer! Also got the latest from 180 Proof/Strata
Records, this time a fuzzed out affair from the obscure Sam Sanders. And still more goin' down: a set for my pops (Bill Evans, natch) and Herb Geller jamming with some European electric groovers! Let's do this.

Electric boogaloo song.
The Mt. Airy Groove returns after a week on the left coast (fear not, I'll always prefer Biggie to Tupac). Got a set for the recently departed Cedar Walton, the consummate sideman who left his mark on countless classic albums. Plus, a set of California inspired tunes and lots of Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson...cuz the Saucegirl just turned 40!

13 degrees & 13 vans.
The finest purveyors of modern space jazz, The Heliocentrics, are back at it again with a new album, so get ready to dig in Wednesday night. Also got San Diego-area bassman Ben Wanicur on his fine new release featuring Peter Sprague. Plus, more from Lady (album of the year already???), a lost Lucky Thompson live date from the late '70s, and a funky Prestige-inspired recording from a new trio from Austin called Dupree. See you soon.

Younger men grow older.
Business as usual Wednesday night after last week's mad collaboration with Tom Casetta.
Got a new one from singers Nicole Wray & Terri Walker on their
transcendent new release on Truth & Soul simply called Lady. Plus, more from Charles Bradley and Nicole Willis' new LPs, sweetness from Kev Beadle's new jazz dance compilation and another from the newest entry in Jazzman's Spiritual Jazz series, this time featuring Grachan Moncur! And sadly, we'll pay tribute to the recently departed Richie Havens. Be there, peoples.

Jazz burners.
Come dig some jazz burners Wednesday night at the Mt. Airy Groove. Jazzman forges ahead with yet another release in their amazing Spiritual Jazz series, this time focusing on American expats in Europe. (Still looking for vol. 1 on vinyl...whose got me?). But Jazzman isn't the only one releasing deep jazz: got a comp from on BBE from Dingwalls vet Kev Beadle and more from that great Freedom Jazz France collection. Plus, a new one from the Screaming Eagle of Soul, Charles Bradley!

Donald Byrd...word.
American jazz trumpeter & music innovator Donald Byrd passed away in early February. Got a two hour tribute, checking out his inventive early 60's stuff and then focusing on his funky side...even his imprint on hiphop. See you Wednesday.

Plus, some French jazz on a great comp from Heavenly Sweetness, German trumpeter Till Brönner and Booker T. diggin' on the Beatles. My man Steve G. sits in. See you later!
